Clare captain Gary Brennan enjoyed a productive Saturday evening at Croke Park.
The Banner claimed the Allianz Football League Division Three title with a fine win over Kildare at GAA headquarters.
Colm Collins' improving team finished strongly to secure national silverware with Brennan influential.
Brennan earned 34 per cent of the votes cast on the GAA’s official Twitter, (@officialgaa), Facebook and Instagram pages.
GAA.ie FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
1: Gary Brennan (Clare) 3065 (34 per cent)
2: Ciaran Kilkenny (Dublin) 2505 (28 per cent)
3: Connor McAliskey (Tyrone) 2272 (25 per cent)
4: Derek Maguire (Louth) 1138 (13 per cent)
Clare football’s Captain Fantastic Gary Brennan was his typically inspirational self in the Banner County’s epic one-point Allianz Football League Division 3 Final win over Kildare on Saturday.
Brennan is one the best footballers in the country and drove Clare forward against the Lilywhites from his midfield berth.
He got on a huge amount of ball, and it was fitting that it should be he who claimed a spectacular high catch under pressure on the edge of the Kildare square and laid off the ball to Dean Ryan for a crucial equalising goal in the last minute of normal time.
Ciaran Kilkenny has been nominated for the GAA.ie Football Player of the Week twice this month, which is a testament to the brilliant form he has been in so far this year.
He was a human dynamo for the Dubs in Sunday’s Allianz Division 1 Final victory over Kerry and really lit up Croke Park with the energy and effectiveness of his performance.
The Castleknock clubman kicked two nice points from play, hoovered up a huge amount of possession, and always used it wisely. It was notable too that he was driving Kerry defenders backwards with his physicality whenever he ran into them.
Connor McAliskey has been in tremendous form all year for Tyrone so it was no surprise that he made such a decisive impact in Sunday’s Allianz Football League Division 2 victory over Cavan.
The Clonoe club-man scored five points from play and, along with his chief partner in crime, Ronan O’Neill, terrorised the Cavan defence.
McAliskey is more than just an out and out scorer. He’s a physically robust target-man who gives his team-mates a wonderfully willing and able outlet who can win all sorts of deliveries that are sent his way.
There are few sights in Gaelic Football more impressive than a rampaging wing-back who gets forward to score and Derek Maguire certainly caught the eye for Louth in Saturday’s victory over Antrim in the Allianz Football League Division 4 Final.
He scored 1-2 from play, and the goal was a really special finish early in the match that kept Louth in touch against an Antrim side that dominated much of the first half.
He finished the match with an exclamation mark too, popping up with the insurance point at the death for the Wee County.
